Building an adequate plate does not require expensive or unfamiliar foods. Many foods we eat every day can provide the nutrients our bodies need when selected and combined appropriately.

An adequate meal provides sufficient energy and essential nutrients to meet the body's needs. This can be achieved by including a variety of vegetables and fruits, protein-rich foods, carbohydrate sources and healthy fats in appropriate proportions.

What does an adequate plate look like?

An adequate plate should include a variety of foods that provide energy, protein, vitamins, minerals, fibre, and healthy fats. Rather than focusing on one “perfect” food, think about how different food groups complement one another.

For a practical everyday meal, aim to include:

* Vegetables and fruits – such as leafy vegetables, tomatoes, carrots, garden eggs, oranges, pawpaw, watermelon or other available produce.

* Protein-rich foods – such as beans, lentils, eggs, fish, poultry, lean meat, milk or yoghurt.

* Carbohydrate-rich foods – such as rice, yam, potatoes, maize, millet, oats, bread, cassava or other grains and staples.

* Healthy fats – from foods such as nuts, seeds, avocado and appropriate amounts of vegetable oils.

Keep it practical

Healthy eating does not have to be complicated or expensive. By choosing a variety of familiar foods in appropriate amounts, you can build adequate meals that support your nutritional needs and overall wellbeing.
